Private Car vs the Train from Kandy to Ella
The Kandy to Ella train is often called one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, and it genuinely is beautiful. But it takes 6 to 7 hours and the best observation car seats sell out weeks in advance. A private car covers the same journey in half the time.
Car: 3.5–4 hours door-to-door
Train: 6–7 hours, seats sell out
Car stops at waterfalls & tea estates
Train views across valleys
Car: fixed price per vehicle
Train: per-person fares, queues
For groups of three or more, the private car is often the more practical choice: faster, cheaper per person, and flexible enough to stop wherever you want.

Morning departures are best: Leaving Kandy at 8–9 AM gets you to Ella by early afternoon. The mountain roads can get misty and wet by late afternoon, so an earlier start is worth it.
Nuwara Eliya is colder than you expect: At 1,868 metres, Nuwara Eliya is much cooler than the coast. Pack a light layer if you plan to stop there, especially in the morning.
Ramboda Falls: It's visible from the road and the viewing platform is just a short walk from where your driver can park. A five-minute stop and worth it.
Pedro Tea Estate: Tours run throughout the day. Allow around 45 minutes if you'd like to see the factory and have tea on the estate. The driver will wait.

The drive through the tea country was stunning. We stopped at Ramboda Falls and had tea at a plantation. Our driver knew every viewpoint and made the whole journey an experience, not just a transfer.

We were three friends and sharing the cost worked out much cheaper than the train. Plus we arrived in Ella in under 4 hours instead of spending the whole day on the rail. The stops at Nuwara Eliya were a bonus.

With three of us, it worked out to about $25 each for the car. The driver was punctual, the car was clean, and we made two stops with no fuss. Couldn't have asked for more from a taxi transfer.
